This project reactivates a vacant lot and building in the Brooklyn Red Hook neighborhood into a new learning environment. Rather than viewing the built environment and nature as separate entities, this project strives to restore harmony between them while addressing the challenges posed by the current climate crisis, specifically the impacts of rising sea levels. Unlike conventional floodwater management systems, the project takes a unique approach by inviting water into the fabric of the building. By incorporating water into the building’s design, the project seeks to raise awareness and educate its users on the tangible impacts of the global climate crisis. The formal language was developed through a series of 2d and 3d formal explorations, resulting in spatial qualities that serve the dual purpose of operating as a school and community space.
